Days Without Sugar: BATMAN

Honestly, the idea of living sans sucre never would have occurred to me before reading Gary Taubes’ IS SUGAR TOXIC?. Stocking a kitchen without sugar or honey or maple syrup? Giving up my preferred go-to multigrain flax bread because it was too sugary?!? These ideas all would have seemed unnecessarily ascetic to me (until I started to realize a pattern in my sugar consumption that made me wonder if I was a drug addict to sugary substances).

I don’t believe I had ever really heard of someone who avoids sugar and declines even home-baked muffins. (Today, of course, I see many people on-line who are way more sugar-free than I am.)

This message was a big surprise to open and read:

a few days ago I decided to try quitting sugar altogether. I am not quite sure where exactly this came from, but I think I did see an article about you quitting sugar for 485 days, and that may have inspired me. But I also wanted to quit bread and some other problem foods that I’m not supposed to have. So I thought well i’ll quit bread and sugar, and that will be a good start.

So I’m a really active person and not overweight at all. I was probably
exactly the weight I should have been, or very close. Today was the end of
day 6 of no sugar. I noticed on day three that my clothes were a bit
looser, I didn’t think much of it, I was just like oh I must have lost a
bit of body fat, whatever. But today I looked in the mirror with my shirt
off, WTF! my body frame looks so natural and defined. I never noticed it before until now, (now that the extra bodyfat is gone) that before there must have been body fat in weird places and it was actually distorting my body shape and making it look a bit unhealthy. very subtle but now that it’s been 6 days I really notice it. Wow sugar really does add unnecessary body fat. oh but it is a challenge.

before this 6 days span, I was having a small amount of sugar each day and
it was pinning this body fat to my frame in an unnatural way. Not much
sugar at all actually. sometimes it would be just from bread or pastry. I
didn’t drink pop, no candy, it was from foods.

Anyway, thanks for the inspiration. On my way to continue being sugar free for life.

He’s very nice to thank me; as you can see, he was debating giving up sugar all on his own, and he would have done so without seeing or hearing about anything I ever did. His life and consciousness was already tending in that direction, all on their own. (Plus, he’s given up bread, which I haven’t done. I buy different bread now, and overall, less of it, but I do eat healthy sugarless or fairly sugar-free bread.)

Still, it was a real kicker to receive this electronic-mail.

It really made me think.

Me? The Ice-Cream Monster? I inspired someone to give up sugar?

I’ve heard similar comments; a barista in the neighborhood told me she had given up sugar and lost 30 pounds.

That was cool!

Still, this email was different; I guess because he doesn’t live in Parkdale, or commute thru it, and hasn’t even seen the apartment building I live in.

And then he sought me out to say a thanks – for a decision he already wanted to make.

You know, this will read as egotistical, perhaps, and of course, it’s different — I am not anonymous, nor betting it all on the line for the public good, but reading this missive over, I actually felt a little flattered to the point of thinking I was kinda sorta like, well, Bruce Wayne.

And honestly, it affects how I feel. I used to feel a sense of accountability; today, I sort of feel a responsibility, if I can say that. It’s never felt as easy to say no to jam and cookie dough as it does on this day.
