Wô de ming zi shi Jing; nî jìao shen me ming zi?
After a day cramming Mandarin as hard as I can on ChineseSkill, which is a total clone of DuoLingo, I am amazed at how simple and basic and minimalist and fun this language is.
I is coming
You is coming
She is coming, too
We is coming
You is coming
They is coming, as well
As far as I can tell, you create a past or future tense by saying, “I is coming yesterday,” or, “I is coming next June for sure!”
It’s amazingly minimalist and essential.
I prepped hard to work at a conference attended by scores of Chinese visitors, and do you know what? I never got a single chance to welcome a single person with a single phrase! I have no idea how bad my pronunciation actually is. But I learned a lot of sentences and a lot of terms and words; Mandarin is a very friendly language!
