Girl Power, or, Kathleen Wynne For The Win

My sort of go-to guy/weblogger for “politics”, CalgaryGrit, rooted for Gerard Kennedy as Ontario’s new Premier-designate, and I liked his arguments. Still, I was happy to read that Kathleen Wynne won the race yesterday. 80% of Canadians now live under a female Premier, a new local record, and pretty cool achievement.

I’ve been keen all week about the prospect of one of the two female front-runners winning this race, and I’ve heard people (well, guys) say that it shouldn’t matter if the Premier (or whatever position) is a man or woman. It shouldn’t matter, yet it does; maybe in a century or two, it won’t matter anymore. Today, it makes me happy to see women getting more active and more powerful voices in the world (of course, it’s not perfect: the super pro-female power columnist Nicholas Kristof notes today that less than 17% of NY Times columnists are women!)! “Politics” is mostly a circus sideshow, I know, and I personally doubt that our world as run by women would be all that much better than our world run by men; I strongly figure that people are just people. Still, it’s a lot fairer and it’s better for little kids to see people of all kinds, certainly including women, in high-ranking positions. This 80% number makes me optimistic about the future of kids today.

P.S.: It’s cool to live in Canada; even the “vast right-wing conspiracy” at SUN News calls openly-gay and lesbonically-married Kathleen Wynne a homey “Premier Mom” in its headline this morning.
