Adventure: GOLDFISH – Mr. Maverick

Thanks to indie casting director Justin Chatwin, we were lucky enough to cast this handsome and very civilized dude in a dynamic lead role in GOLDFISH, the Parkdale Un-Mystery.

Maverick has been a treat and a life experience for every single crewmember on this picture.  It is rare to work with animal in movies… especially in guerilla movies.  Daily, we are amazed at Maverick’s obedience and willingness and his patience.  Everyone was kinda sorry to wrap him and say farewell (for now!) to this actor.

It was hard to find Maverick.  Justin Chatwin put a lot of time and effort into it.  It is not a hard role to play, this one.  But it requires a dog who isn’t a purebred, who can be positively identified by a photograph alone.  Justin had to hear a lot of No’s from GOLDFISH on Golden Retrievers and Poodles.  Maverick was a guy who looked unique enough to kidnap from a photograph.

His life partner and trainer Brandon is a great guy with a great girlfriend who loves Maverick, too.  They are a happy team.  Brandon has a lot of energy and respects and loves Maverick so much; the story is about a happy and loved dog, and Maverick really brought that out to our set, all the time.  Behind every great dog actor is a great dog wrangler!  Brandon brought patience with the crew and Maverick, and constant plans for ways to coax Maverick into doing what we wanted.   Maverick was frequently a one-take wonder, and he never gave us a millimeter of trouble, ever.  What a guy!

He may just end up as the Final Frame in our little picture.

It’s a picture about a dog… without Maverick (and Brandon) (and Justin), we wouldn’t have had a movie at all.
